Are they still maintained?

3 of 3 Firebase alternatives here had a code push or release in the last 180 days (checked Oct 29, 2026).

Why is PocketBase's GitHub repo archived?
PocketBase is not abandoned. Its GitHub repository was archived in late October 2026 because the maintainer, Gani Georgiev, moved development and new releases to his own self-hosted Git platform at ganigeorgiev.com. He announced the move in September 2026 and said no GitHub mirror will be maintained. Older releases stay on GitHub; new ones (v0.41.0 and later) are only on the new host. If you use PocketBase as a Go library, newer versions are imported from ganigeorgiev.com/pocketbase instead of github.com/pocketbase.

Latest release: v0.41.1 on Oct 28, 2026, published on the new host. Sources: Maintainer's announcement: "Preparations to migrate from GitHub" (Sep 12, 2026) · Archived GitHub README: "The repo has moved" · v0.40.6 changelog: last release on GitHub · New home of the code and releases

What switching from Firebase costs

Firebase: current plans and prices are on Firebase's pricing page.

AlternativeHow you run itSoftware costWhat you pay for
SupabaseYour server, or the project's hosted plan$0 (Apache-2.0)A server you rent (or own), or the project's paid hosted plan.
PocketBaseYour server$0 (MIT)A server you rent or own, plus your time for updates and backups.
AppwriteYour server, or the project's hosted plan$0 (BSD-3-Clause)A server you rent (or own), or the project's paid hosted plan.

Self-hosting basics: Supabase, PocketBase and Appwrite need a server, which can be a small cloud server or a spare machine at home. For a sense of scale, DigitalOcean's price list shows a 1 GiB server at $6/month and 2 GiB at $12/month (checked Oct 29, 2026). Check each project's documented requirements before choosing a size, and budget time for updates and backups.

Don't want to run a server? Supabase and Appwrite offer a hosted plan run by the project itself. Prices change, so check each project's site.

Firebase alternatives: common questions

What is the best open-source alternative to Firebase?

It depends on how you use Firebase. Of the 3 options here, Supabase is the most followed on GitHub (114k stars) and is actively maintained, with its latest release on Oct 16, 2026.

Is there a self-hosted Firebase alternative?

Yes. Supabase, PocketBase and Appwrite run on a server you control, so your data stays with you. If you'd rather not run a server, Supabase and Appwrite also offer a hosted plan from the people who make them.

Is there a free alternative to Firebase?

Yes. Every project on this page can be downloaded and used at no cost from its public repository. Server apps are free software, but you pay for the server they run on.

Are these Firebase alternatives still maintained?

As of Oct 29, 2026, 3 of 3 had a code push or release in the last 180 days. PocketBase's GitHub repository is archived only because development moved to its own host, where releases continue. None are flagged as inactive or archived. We re-check every project weekly.

How much does it cost to switch from Firebase?

The software itself is free. For server apps, the main cost is hosting: as a reference point, DigitalOcean lists a 1 GiB server at $6/month and a 2 GiB server at $12/month (checked Oct 29, 2026). Check each project's documented requirements before choosing a size. The hidden cost is time: moving your data and, for self-hosted apps, keeping up with updates and backups.
